BREAK THE CYCLE OF SUFFERING CAUSED BY ECZEMA
A top celebrity doctor has warned that the common ‘skin sensitisers’ contained in modern skin care products can worsen eczema and even initiate the onset of dermatitis.
Eczema affects around 10-20 per cent of school children and 3-5 per cent of adults and cases have more than doubled over the last 30 years.
Environmental factors have certainly been one of the main causes for this rise along with an increasing exposure to allergens. However ‘skin sensitisers’ within skin care products are another cause for the onset and worsening of eczema.
GP and resident doctor on ITV’s ‘This Morning’, Dr Chris Steele said: “For those who may not be aware ‘skin sensitisers’ tend to be chemicals which can cause an allergic skin reaction. For some, this reaction happens straight away, for others it may take weeks, months or even years. I’ve long believed that it is these skin sensitisers which have caused my patients ongoing problems.
“It may seem strange that creams contain chemicals which can actually irritate the skin. Whilst these common chemical skin sensitisers often have no positive effect on the moisturising ability of creams, they are included in the formulations primarily as part of the preservative system. They help make sure the creams remain stable and don’t go off before they are used.”
An effective moisturizing regime can have a hugely positive effect for sufferers but many cannot use creams long-term and are forced to constantly change the brand they use as their skin develops adverse reactions to sensitisers. This cycle never allows the skin to heal and can be incredibly frustrating for sufferers.
DermaSalve skincare products are the first ever moisturising cream range with no common skin sensititsers and are specially formulated to care for dry and sensitive skin.
The range was developed by practising GP, Dr Mark Randle after he discovered his youngest son’s skin was beginning to react to some baby care products. He also found that a number of patients with dry skin problems were reporting lack of progress and even reactions to creams that were prescribed.
Dr Randle said: “I did some research into the pharmaceutical and cosmetic creams that were available in the UK and Europe and found that all of them contained ingredients which had the potential to cause inflamed skin reactions.
“I then began to develop a range which was skin sensitiser free, using ingredients such as wheatgerm, jojoba, palm oils, grapeseed extract and aloe vera to optimise moisturisation and Vitamins C and E to improve skin condition.”
Dr Chris Steele continues: “It’s funny how things often turn full circle, but I now have two young grand daughters who suffer from eczema. Both now use DermaSalve and have stuck with it with positive results. I’ve recommended Dr Randle’s creams to many people now, all with tremendous results.
“I wrote to Mark recently to tell him about the impact of his work on my family. He told me he’s had lot’s of positive feedback from eczema sufferers but is still dismayed at how little is communicated about skin sensitisers to those who need to know. To my knowledge DermaSalve is still the only range of creams out there containing none of the common skin sensitisers. The challenge is out there for everyone else!”
